Job Board vs Careers Website: Which Should You Build?
A careers website and a job board can both publish vacancies, but they are different products. Choosing the wrong model creates confusing navigation and missing operational requirements.
A careers website represents one employer
Its main goal is to help candidates understand the organization and apply for current roles. It combines employer information, workplace and benefits content, hiring guidance and individual vacancy pages under one trusted domain.
The organization controls every listing and application route. Content ownership is straightforward, and the website may hand candidates to a separate ATS after the public job page.
A job board serves candidates and multiple employers
A board needs employer records, submission rules, moderation, duplicate prevention, taxonomy and candidate search across many listings. Commercial boards may also require employer accounts, paid packages, invoicing, featured listings and abuse controls.
Those workflows are substantially more complex than publishing articles with job schema. A CMS can provide the content surface, but it does not automatically provide marketplace or ATS operations.
Compare the required operating workflow
Ask who creates jobs, who verifies employers, where applications go, how edits are approved, how roles expire and how misleading listings are reported. Decide whether candidate accounts, saved searches, alerts, resumes, analytics or multi-board syndication are requirements.
For either model, every job page needs accurate visible details, crawlable navigation, a stable canonical URL and responsible expiry. Structured data should be generated only for active real vacancies.
Where EdgeOrigin fits today
EdgeOrigin is a strong current fit for an employer, publisher or organization that wants job opportunities as managed website content with validated JobPosting data, expiry controls, sitemaps and optional indexing notifications. It can also manage supporting pages, employer information and editorial guides.
It should not currently be positioned as a complete self-service job marketplace, applicant tracking system or recruitment pipeline. Evaluate those capabilities separately before committing to a full job-board business model.
EdgeOrigin publishes practical website guidance grounded in current platform capabilities. We do not promise search rankings. Product details and external search tools can change, so verify requirements that are critical to your business.
